Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) był francuskim malarzem, grafikiem i ilustratorem pochodzenia szwajcarskiego. Urodził się w 1859 r. w Lozannie, gdzie studiował również literaturę w Akademii Lozańskiej. Następnie odbył staż w drukarni tkanin w Miluzie. W tym czasie pracował jako rysownik techniczny, dopóki malarz Franrçois Bocion nie zaprosił go wraz z żoną Emilie do przeniesienia się do Paryża, do gminy artystów w dzielnicy Montmartre. Tam Théophile-Alexandre zaprzyjaźnił się z malarzem Adolphe Willette. Przez Adolphe'a Théophile-Alexandre poznał paryski kabaret "Le Chat Noir". Później tworzył różne plakaty i grafiki dla kabaretu. Wykonywał rysunki i ilustracje do gazety kabaretu, gazety "Le Mirliton" oraz do zbioru chanson Aristide Bruanta, którego poznał w dzielnicy artystów. Oprócz Adolphe'a Willette'a spotkał tu również artystów Félix Vallotton, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec i Louis Anquetin.
Początkowo Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen wystawiał swoje prace w Salon des Indépendants. W większości były to przedstawienia wiejskich pejzaży, roślin i aktów. W 1884 roku odbyła się jego pierwsza wystawa w La Bodinière. Potem nastąpiły regularne zamówienia dla Le Rire i Gil Blas. W 1911 r. wraz z innymi artystami założył czasopismo Les Humouristes. W latach 1883-1920 wykonał setki rysunków, niektóre pod pseudonimami ze względu na ich polityczną treść. W czasie I wojny światowej pojawiły się utwory krytyczne wobec wojny.
Jego córka Colette często pojawiała się w jego pracach. Przede wszystkim jednak Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen uwielbiał rysować koty, ale także inne zwierzęta. Koty fascynowały go swoją charyzmą, ruchami, proporcjami i charakterem. Kultura Francji przełomu wieków, kabaret i warunki społeczne w mieście były również częstymi tematami jego rysunków. Jego twórczość wywarła wpływ na wielu innych artystów, w tym Pabla Picassa. Zmarł w Paryżu w 1923 r. i został pochowany na Montmartre.
