Flamandzki malarz barokowy David Teniers (1610 - 1690) był niezwykle wszechstronnym artystą, który uprawiał niemal wszystkie możliwe gatunki malarstwa. Unowocześnił wiele gatunków malarstwa, takich jak martwa natura, historia, pejzaż i portret. Ponieważ jego ojciec David Teniers również był znanym malarzem, często określa się go mianem Davida Teniersa Młodszego. Jego ojciec był również jego pierwszym nauczycielem, co miało duży wpływ na jego twórczość. W wieku 16 lat zaczął u niego terminować. Razem pracowali nad projektami jego ojca. Teniers starszy częściej miał problemy finansowe i kilka razy musiał z tego powodu iść do więzienia. David Teniers młodszy musiał w tym czasie wspierać finansowo rodzinę, wykonując i sprzedając kopie starych mistrzów.
Innymi ważnymi postaciami w edukacji Davida Teniersa i mającymi wpływ na jego późniejszy styl byli jego rodacy Peter Paul Rubens i Adriaen Brouwer. W 1637 r. ożenił się również z przybraną córką Rubena, Anną Brueghels. Jej biologicznym, nieżyjącym już ojcem był słynny malarz Jan Brueghel der Ältere. Dzięki temu małżeństwu Teniers nie tylko umocnił swój związek z Rubensem, który był drużbą na ślubie, ale także zapewnił sobie miejsce w elitarnych kręgach sceny artystycznej. Bo choć wiele dzieł Teniersa przedstawiało zwykłych ludzi, takich jak chłopi, żołnierze, czy sceny w pijalniach, to jego samego pociągały wyższe sfery społeczne i szlachta. Nie otrzymał wprawdzie tytułu szlacheckiego, ale w 1651 r. udało mu się przynajmniej awansować na nadwornego malarza w Brukseli.
Jako nadworny malarz był także kustoszem bogatych zbiorów sztuki arcyksięcia Leopolda Wilhelma. W tym czasie opracował "Theatrum pictorium", pierwszy ilustrowany katalog kolekcji obrazów. Teniers był niezwykle płodnym artystą. Mówi się, że stworzył w sumie około 2000 dzieł sztuki, z których wiele setek przetrwało do dziś. Spośród nich około 800 przedstawia sceny karczemne, alchemiczne lub chłopskie, takie jak "Wesele chłopskie", "Alchemik" czy "Palacze w karczmie". Oprócz tych obrazów rodzajowych, większość jego obrazów, około 200 motywów, dotyczy "Kuszenia św. Antoniego". Obok Petera Paula Rubensa, Anthonius van Dyck i Jacob Jordaens, Teniers Młodszy jest uważany za jednego z najważniejszych malarzy flamandzkich XVII wieku.
